what is smv in garment industry

Standard minute value (smv)

SMV means standard minute value. In garments industry, smv mainly use for production planning, line balancing, efficiency calculation, target setting, costing, manpower planning.

In garments industry smv is a standard time in minute, required to a worker complete one garment or one process or operation under the standard working condition. SMV is a term that fashion brands and manufacturers often use when talking about cost, time, and how much capacity a garment takes on the factory floor. Many garment-manufacturing companies calculate the SMV for their garments item. Industrial engineers are the ones who measure the standard time needed to make each garment sample. Let me discus about SMV, the most critical factor, widely used and much talked about term in the garment industry.

At first, It is important for us to know What is smv? How is smv calculated?

Simply SMV is a just time minute value, A measure of the time it takes to complete a task. To put it more simply If an operator takes 30 seconds to complete one operation, then:

SMV = 30 ÷ 60 = 0.50 minutes

So, the SMV = 0.50 minutes.

Formula:

SMV = Operation Time (seconds) ÷ 60 ( operation time included allowance)

Examples:

– 30 seconds → 0.50 SMV

– 45 seconds → 0.75 SMV

– 60 seconds → 1.00 SMV

– 90 seconds → 1.50 SMV

However, if 30 seconds is only the actual operation time, it represents the observed/basic time. In garments IE, when calculating standard SMV, an allowance is added, so the final SMV will be higher than 0.50 minutes.

In garments IE these are formula used for calculating Smv. Given below:

SMV                      = Basic Time + Allowance

Basic Time            =  observed Time × Rating Factor

Observed time  = Total cycle time ÷ Number of cycle

So this is the main formula to calculate SMV (Standard Minute Value)

Example from real data:

Sleeve join

Cycle Time

Observed time

28 28 26 28 25

27

Basic time = observed time × Rating Factor

= 27 × .85                       ( Operator Rating Performance / Rating Factor 85%)

= 22.95

SMV = Basic Time + Allowance

= 22.95 + 15%                   (15% allowance)

=26.39 sec

Now convert seconds into minutes:

SMV = 26.39 ÷ 60

= 0.44 Min.

So, Sleeve join SMV 0.44 and Capacity 136 pcs.
